While IMF agent Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) works tirelessly to catch The Syndicate, an underground and virtually untraceable anarchist cell, CIA director Alan Hunley (Alec Baldwin) becomes convinced that Ethan has spiraled into the depths of paranoia and delusion. After Hunley successfully absorbs control of IMF, for Ethan to successfully stop The Syndicate, he must live and work alone.
