The Barbie Diaries (2006)

An underrated kid classic, perhaps more relevant now than it was in 2006.

Regan Humphrey

Barbie Roberts (Kelly Sheridan) is determined to make a splash in her sophomore year of high school, and she knows exactly how to do it—applying to be an anchor for her school’s news program. But when the top reporting spot is snagged by Raquelle (Chiara Zanni), Barbie’s rival, she’ll need to come up with a cutting edge story to prove she has what it takes to make anchor. She elects to go undercover and get the inside scoop on her school’s popular crowd, but how much of herself and her life will she have to give up in her investigation? In this colorful and slightly-magic cautionary tale about high school, friendship, and the importance of knowing yourself, Barbie learns that sometimes the best response to mean girls, missed opportunities, and high school gossip is “So what?”

Come for quintessential flavors of the 2000s, like Skye Sweetnam, mediocre animation, and mean girls.
